Sapporo is the fourth-largest city in Japan by population, and the largest city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Located in Ishikari Subprefecture, it is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, and an ordinance-designated city of Japan.

Sapporo is clean, friendly and relaxed, with numerous parks and wide, tree-lined streets. Families play on stone sculptures, people feed pigeons and there are festivals all year round. Museums and a wonderful botanical garden make for fun-filled sightseeing. The variety of shopping arcades, restaurants and nightlife in Susukino gives visitors and residents plenty to do.

Geography

Sapporo is a city located in the southwest part of Ishikari Plain and the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River, a tributary stream of the Ishikari River. Roadways in the urban district are laid to make grid plan road. The western and southern part of Sapporo are occupied by a number of mountains including Mount Teine, Maruyama, and Mount Moiwa, as well as a lot of rivers including the Ishikari River, Toyohira River, and S?sei River.

Climate

Sapporo has a humid continental climate, with a wide range of temperature between the summer and winter. Summers are generally warm but not humid, and winters quite cold and snowy. With an average snowfall of 630 cm, it is one of the few metropolises in the world with such heavy snowfall, enabling it to hold events and festivals with snow statues and objects. The city's annual average precipitation is around 1,100 mm, and the mean annual temperature is 8.5 °C.

Cuisine

Sapporo is known as the birthplace of miso ramen, a ramen noodle dish using miso, and Sapporo ramen is also widely known. The Kouraku Ramen Meitengai, an alley lined with many ramen restaurants, was established in 1951 in Susukino district, and after its demolition due to plans for the Sapporo Olympics, the Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho was established in the same place. It currently attracts many tourists throughout the year. From the year 1966, a food company named Sanyo Foods began to sell instant ramen under the brand name "Sapporo Ichiban". In 2001, Sapporo Ramen was listed as one of the Hokkaido Heritage along with other ramen in Hokkaido such as Asahikawa Ramen and Hakodate Ramen. On October 1, 2004, The Sapporo Ramen Republic, a theme park focused on ramen, was opened at the 10th floor of Sapporo Esta, a commercial complex located in front of the Sapporo Station.

Nightlife in Sapporo

500 Bar: Pronounced 'gohyakubaa' this place is usually packed even on weekdays with a mix of foreign and local clientele. Every drink on the menu is ¥500, hence the name, and you can order food as well.

Hall Stairs Espresso Bar: With matte-black paint and chain link fencing, this place feels more like an avant-garde theatre production than a place to sip a cup of joe. This smoke-filled place is about as unique as they come.

King Xmhu: This mammoth institution is a Susukino landmark, known for its elaborate concrete face (King Xmhu, one presumes) sculpted outside the entrance. Inside, revellers dance and drink on three floors of neon and strobe.

Blues Alley: A night here can be hit or miss depending on what's happening elsewhere, but it's a good place to relax and perhaps play a game or two on the full-sized pool table...not to be confused with its famous American jazz club namesake.

Sky J: There is some truth to the observation that cocktails seem to taste better when consumed at great heights. Here on the 35th floor of the JR Tower, the views of the Sapporo skyline twinkle to the tune of live piano and jazz music.

Booty: There's always plenty of booty at this discotheque and lounge bar, which serves up Western-style fast food alongside urban beats.
