Playa de las Américas is a purpose-built holiday resort in the southern and southern-west part of the Municipality of Arona, close to the adjoining Municipality of Adeje in the west of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. It was built in the 1960s beside the town of Los Cristianos and stretching west to the Costa Adeje. The resort area features bars, nightclubs, restaurants, attractions, and beaches, most of which are man-made with imported sand from Africa due to the darkness of the native volcanic sand. Playa de las Americas is a centre of nightlife in Tenerife. Nightlife is spread around the resort and includes the Veronicas Strip, Starco Commercial Centre and the Patch.

Playa de las Américas - Tenerife

Playa de las Américas is the party capital of Tenerife, that’s the most important aspect to remember about this lively resort on the south coast of the island. Thousands of revellers live it up in this vibrant and colourful holiday destination that is renowned for its 24-hour festivities, making it one of the most popular places to visit in all of Europe.

Young people head to Playa de las Américas for its hedonistic appeal; in particular the one kilometre stretch known as Verónicas that is packed with nightclubs, cabaret bars, live music venues, shops and restaurants. Neon lights, music pumping from the doorways and people dancing in the street are what you will find here. It really does come alive at night, every night!

If you are looking for peace and quiet, then perhaps Playa de las Américas may not be for you. Bear in mind that many holidaymakers who stay elsewhere on the island visit this bustling resort before heading back to the much calmer ambience of their chosen retreat – see Tenerife’s recommendations here.

And then there is Golf las Américas, an 18-hole course right in the heart of this resort. It offers stunning views, verdant greens and has lakes that twist and turn through the landscape. If you want to try out your skills in a special setting, head to the nearby Golf del Sur, the south’s premium hotspot for golfers.

In addition, water activities like jet-skiing, scuba diving and windsurfing are on offer as well as a large number of boat excursions to choose from including whale and dolphin watching cruises, trips on a pirate ship and a journey to the seabed on a yellow submarine.

How to have a good night out in Playa de Las Américas

The epicentre of Tenerife's live entertainment, you'll find everything from cabaret, live bands, karaoke, discos, comedy and clubs enticing you in every night of the week here. For a real night out with a lot of Spanish women you could visit Barcelona. The nightlife in Barcelona is outstanding and you'll have a night out that you never forget.

Parque de la Paz

There are three main areas to head to. The Parque de la Paz area is a row of locals (business units) providing nightly cabaret, most of it of a very high standard. Personal favourites here are Soul Suite for soul music and the Bull's Head with regular live band Vagabonds.

Where to shop in Playa de Las Américas

The best shopping area around Playa de Las Américas and Los Cristianos is at the CC Safari (open Mon-Sat 10am-3pm, 5-9pm; Sun 7-9pm) opposite the Mare Nostrum Resort in the heart of Las Américas where you'll find designer outlets sitting alongside Spanish high street names. After dark, dancing fountains at the front of the centre provide a colourful spectacle (displays at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm) to turn parting with your money into an excursion. Next door, the newer Américas Plaza is also worth a browse.

Just about everywhere you go in these southern resorts you'll find the illegal hawkers selling watches, sunglasses and handbags. They are generally good fun and go away with a firm refusal but if you're tempted to buy from them, don't be surprised if the Rolex you got such an amazing deal on stops working before you've even landed back in Blighty.
